NEIL Morrissey plays keen detectorist and local history nut Martin Stone in this humorous drama about a dilemma involving a lot of money.
A family man, married to Anne (Fay Ripley), Martin is forced – in the spirit of male bonding – to go metal detecting with his gobby soon-to-be son-in-law Ashley (James Buckley).
Anne and his daughter Laura ( Jessica Rhodes) think this is a great idea as the boys head off into the idyllic fields of rural Somerset.
Ashley, a bit of an idiot, just makes whizzy noises and mocks Martin as – in true TV Detectorists “what you got?” fashion – he uncovers an old Coke can.
“Is that Saxon Coke? What’s next, Stone Age Pepsi? Greek Fanta?” But there are to be no more false alarms. Martin discovers a hoard of buried Saxon treasure worth millions.
They grab the bags for life from the car, chuck the gold in and head off to contemplate their find.
Martin explains that it’s an important historical find that must be surrendered to the Crown.
But Ashley reckons the law is “finders keepers” – and that’s when the fun begins. Of course, there are financial pressures at home, so landing a massive influx of cash by selling the hoard on the black market could change their lives.
Martin and Anne’s son Josh is disabled and needs full-time care if he’s to live at home, while Laura’s imminent wedding to Ashley adds further strain.
It’s tempting… But with a hoard this good, can it really be that easy?
After all, they might not be the only ones out for the spoils.
