LEO Varadkar has warned county councils that they cannot refuse to work with some Government department­s and expect funding from others.

It comes following a motion passed by Mayo County Council on Monday evening stating that council officials would be instructed not to cooperate with the Dept of Integratio­n on matters relating to asylum seekers and refugees.

The motion was proposed by Independen­t Cllr Michael Kilcoyne and unanimousl­y supported. Both Fianna Fail and Fine Gael cllrs voted in favour of the motion.

Mr Varadkar said: “Local authoritie­s can’t have an a la carte relationsh­ip with central government.

“That’s not a tenable position.”

HEATHER Humphreys has questioned how people can protest at asylum centre accommodat­ion in “the middle of the day when everyone else is working”.

The Social Protection Minister told the Dail that PRSI contributi­ons paid by foreign nationals working in Ireland amounted to €17billion over the past 10 years.

There have been fraught protests at asylum seeker accommodat­ion centres in recent weeks.

On Monday, gardai escorted women and children into the Racket Hall Hotel in

Roscrea, Co Tipperary, through a protest.

The hotel was operating until last Thursday but will now be used to host 160 internatio­nal protection
