A BRAVE 19-year-old cancer sufferer who was hoping to complete a travel bucket list told his family shortly before he died: “Why are you all so sad? I’m going to be fine.”

Corban Bruwer and his family had hoped that they might have a few years to make his dream come true but unfortunately he took a turn for the worse and died holding the hands of his parents last Thursday.

His mum Cheryl, dad Ian and two brothers Conlan and Callan now intend to complete his bucket list in his memory as well as get the tattoos that Corban designed for them to remember him by.

A Gofundme page to help him with his journey has raised over €10,000 which will now be used by his family to see the Northern Lights in Lapland, go on a fishing trip and see his grandparents in Namibia in his memory.

In an update by his dad, he said: “I come to you with a shattered heart.

“Our world was torn asunder on 18th January with Corban’s passing.

“He went peacefully while holding both his mother and my hands.

“He never got to do the final items on his bucket list so we’ll be doing them in his memory.

“We’ll use all the remaining funds to cover funeral costs.

“He spent the day before his passing playing games with his brothers and watching anime with me.

“He also designed a tattoo which Cheryl and I will now be getting.

“On the day of his passing, he was lucid enough to give his family one last hug.

“His final words to us, with his thumbs raised in the air were ‘why are you all so sad, I’m going to be fine’.”

Corban, from Rathnew, Co Wicklow, died just weeks after his 19th birthday following a battle with the aggressive cancer Rhabdomyosarcoma since August 2022.

The young college student who loved rugby, athletics and javelin is survived by his parents and siblings Conlan, 16, and Callan, 12. Paying tribute to her son, a devastated Cheryl said: “Corban was a courageous, kind, fair and loving person and the world is a lesser place without him. We will always hold him dear in spirit and honour him with what was important to him. Caring for one another, showing fairness and kindness and always putting family first.

“He fought cancer bravely, his body may have lost the fight but his spirit was relentless in the battle up to the very end. A true warrior who will never be forgotten.”
