WE CAN STILL GO TO TOWN SAYS CONOR

- King Power Stadium, Tonight, 8pm BY JON WEST

CONOR CHAPLIN has promised that Ipswich will get back to their high-scoring ways in the most exciting promotion chase in years.

The Tractor Boys travel to Leicester tonight looking for the victory that will cut the Foxes’ lead to four points.

Kieran Mckenna’s side also need a point to reclaim second spot from Southampton, with fourth-place Leeds also very much in the race for automatic elevation.

The previous calendar year was a record-breaking one for Town, who accumulated a combined 103 points in League One and then the Championship. An unprecedented 103 league goals were netted – but just three have been scored the last five games.

One win in six is hardly promotion form but attacking midfielder Chaplin (top) said: “It is not like we lost a lot of games in that run – we lost just one.

“We drew more than we were used to but it was never at the point where we were thinking ‘Where is our next win going to come from?’. We are definitely going to concede goals because of the calibre of opponent we are playing against. But we back ourselves to score a lot as well. That’s something we are proud about. We fancy our chances against any team in this division.”

Leicester boss Enzo Maresca welcomed Jamie Vardy’s return after a two-month lay-off by insisting the veteran striker is still his most potent attacking force.

The former England international will be available to start against Ipswich tonight as the Foxes look to bounce back following a rare defeat to rivals Coventry City last week.

Vardy, out since the end of November with a knee injury, is 37 but Maresca said: “Jamie’s age doesn’t matter to me. He is the striker who has scored most goals for us. Yes, he’s probably played more minutes, but he’s also scored the most goals.”
