KALVIN IS SET TO BE A HAMMER

- BY JOHN CROSS

KALVIN PHILLIPS has been offered a Euros lifeline by West Ham.

The Hammers have agreed a six-month loan deal with Manchester City – and pulled off a major coup by also inserting an option to make it permanent in the summer.

Phillips, 28, is flying back to England with the rest of the City squad after a warm-weather training camp in Abu Dhabi and West Ham have booked in a medical for the end of this week.

Juventus have also been interested in doing a deal, but West Ham have stolen a march on the Italian giants.

Phillips (above) was keen to move to safeguard his England place ahead of the European Championship.

Incredibly, Phillips has played just 911 minutes since moving to City from Leeds in a £45million deal in 2022.

He signed a six-year deal, but has struggled to nail down a place under Pep Guardiola – yet has still won five trophies during his time at the Etihad.

That means he has averaged a major trophy every two games, but has grown increasingly frustrated at a lack of game-time.

England boss Gareth Southgate has warned that players must be playing regularly for their clubs and Phillips’ place in the squad was under doubt.

He had started just two Premier League games in 18 months and has gone from being one of England’s biggest stars in the Euros in 2021 to a bench-warmer at City.

West Ham, who have suffered a string of injuries to several players, are rushing to complete a deal ahead of Juventus, while Newcastle and Crystal Palace were also interested.

Newcastle were scared off by City’s demands for a big fee loan fee, believed to be about £7m.

West Ham have agreed to cover all of Phillips’ wages, with the permanent option believed to be worth £40m.
