Talking to Mr Ahern

BRYAN Dobson has presented a number of special programmes such as general elections and the coverage of Queen Elizabeth II’S visit to Ireland in 2011.

In one of his most famous interviews, with former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in 2007 about his financial affairs, Mr Ahern almost broke down in tears under questioning from Dobbo about the “dig out” he received from friends.

There have been some humorous moments too.

Dobson was the man reading the news on the night in 2010 when RTE aired footage of an unfortunate man slipping on an icy street in Dublin.

Speaking to Sinead Kennedy on kids show The Rumour Room on that incident, Bryan said: “His head really cracked. It got thousands of hits [online].”

Dobson was also known not to mince his words if he got annoyed when live on TV.

One clip sees peaceful protesters standing behind an RTE journalist as he speaks to Dobbo from the studio.

The protesters remain silence but hold up placards reading: “Burn the bonds not the billions.”

Initially, Bryan just warns the journalist to ignore the “visitors” but he then cuts the conversation short as he notes: “I’m going to stop that there, because the idiots behind you are a bit of a distraction, so we will try and get rid of those and come back to you, if we can.”

And in 2014, Dobbo was caught on camera as he started the Six One broadcast from the wrong spot.

The Dubliner could be seen quickly moving from the spot where presenters stand to sit at the table beside co-presenter Sharon Ni Bheolain before the pair get into reading the headlines.
