HOW KEN IT BE?

Ryan Gosling’s fury at Barbie Oscars snubs

- BY CHRISTOPHER BUCKTIN US Editor news@irishmirror.ie @Dailymirror

SHOCKED Ryan Gosling says “there is no Ken without Barbie” after the feminist film’s female lead and director missed out on Oscar nominations while he got a nod for playing the sidekick.

Ryan, 43, was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor statue while title star Margot Robbie was absent from the Best Actress list, and director Greta Gerwig was snubbed for Best Director.

The fact that a man was favoured over the women on the same project sparked a sexism row – ironic seeing as that was the main theme of the movie.

Ryan said after the nominations were announced this week: “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.

“They made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history.

“Their work should be recognised along with the other very deserving nominees.”

British record producer Mark Ronson also championed the pair after he and Andrew Wyatt received a Best Original Song nod for the power ballad I’m Just Ken.

He said of Margot, 33, who was also an executive producer on the film: “She put this whole damn thing together and then gave a tour de force ‘make you laugh one second and cry the next’ performance.”

He praised Greta, 40, for “touching us at such a soulful level”.

Barbie garnered eight Oscar nominations in total, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera. And Greta was nominated in the Best Adapted Screenplay category alongside co-writer and husband Noah Baumbach. Barbie’s other nominations were for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design plus another in the song category – What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’connell.

Winners will be revealed on March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in LA.
