MODERN Family star actress Sofia Vergara is captivating as a badass drug lord in this tense crime thriller.
Inspired by real events, Vergara plays vicious Griselda Blanco, who journeyed from Medellin in Colombia to becoming the Queenpin of Miami’s drug empire.
A savvy and ambitious woman of power, she was a criminal mastermind who created one of the most profitable cartels in history.
In 1970s-80s Miami, Blanco’s lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her expertly navigate between business and family, leading her to become widely known as “the Godmother”.
And this six-parter begins with a quote from crime lord Pablo Escobar, who said: “The only man I was ever afraid of was a woman named Griselda Blanco.”
Produced by the team behind Narcos, the series opens in the late-1970s in Medellin as an injured and frightened Griselda packs her bags, wakes her sons, informs them she is divorcing their stepfather and they’re moving to Miami.
Once there, she’s after reinvention – not content with the job at her friend’s travel agency.
Despite promises to distance herself from the drugs game that she had been exposed to, it doesn’t last and she’s soon trying to sell the kilo of cocaine that she smuggled into the country.
Vergara, who is an executive producer on the show, is someone we’re used to seeing in comedy.
But here she is transformed into a ruthless criminal – and it’s something to behold.
