Good luck Bambie Thug, Eur the face of our contest hopes

-

YOU’D think a nation that once sent a puppet turkey to Eurovision wouldn’t get upset with sending Bambie Thug.

Like, seriously, after the Dustin debacle in 2008, when the Turkey both sang and delivered Irelande Douze Points, we are really in no position to fault any hopeful based on how they look and sound.

Not to be too hard on Dustin, but that really was the moment when many Eurovision fans thought: “Well, we had a good run while it lasted, but we’re never winning this thing again...”

So you could say that we are finally catching up with the rest of Europe, in picking a performer like Bambie Thug.

Yes, Bambie is not exactly in the tradition of clean-cut crooners like Johnny Logan or Butch Moore (ask your dad) or your classic big ballad belters such as Linda Martin or Niamh Kavanagh.

But who knows, if Johnny had agreed to wear a black lace wedding dress like Bambie, he might have done the hat-trick? Fashions have moved on by light years since our golden Eurovision times of the 80s and 90s.

It’s just taken years for Ireland to get used to the fact that Eurovision is not really about having a polite pop song and a lovely voice these days and hasn’t been for a decade or more. We did get close to the Eurovision ideal with Jedward, who had a brilliant song and performance with Lipstick, in fairness.

By the way, would you believe that was 13 years ago?

But this year, it will be great to turn the tables on the rest of Europe, and have other nations going, “What in the name of Jesus is going one here!?” for a change.

Yes Ireland, to paraphrase the great David Bowie, it’s time for us to embrace the strange.

It’s time to show the rest of Europe that we’ve left the My Lovely of Eurovision songs behind us

Horse era forever.

Go for it, Bambie Thug. Some of us may not have the first feckin’ clue what’s going on, but the nation is behind you!
