MIRROR REPORTER EUROVISION legend Johnny Logan has backed Ireland’s Bambie Thug to triumph in this year’s competition.

The non-binary performer emerged as the winner of Friday’s night Late Late Show Eurosong Special.

Their song Doomsday Blues, beat five other entries, and will represent Ireland in Malmo, Sweden, in May.

Logan, who won the competition in 1980 and 1987 as a performer and again in 1992 as a songwriter, told the Sunday World: “It’s probably the best and most original entry Ireland has had for as long as I can remember. It’s a very good choice and it will definitely get attention. It’s eyecatching and different.

“Viewers related to it and that’s why it was chosen.

“If it doesn’t end up doing really well, I will be surprised.

“I’ve always hoped Irish songs would do well over the last few years, but I never really felt that they would. This one I think has a really good chance. It just depends on the make up of the jury and the other songs that are in the contest.”

Speaking of Doomsday Blues, Bambie Thug, who is from Cork, said: “It transports you from alt witchy verses to killer screams, pop choruses, a jazzy middle-eight, before ending in a metallic roar of electro and heavy guitars.

“It perfectly showcases the different facets of me as an artist. I can be explosive and hard-hitting, but I can also be sweet and soulful.

“I first started watching Eurovision with my family at a very young age and when I was old enough, my sister would bring me to Eurovision parties with her friends.

“I remember being so obsessed with Loreen and Euphoria that I sang it at a dance fundraising event when I was around 18.”

Ireland has won the Eurovision seven times, but the last success was in 1996.
