Skeletal remains ‘may be missing man’
SKELETAL remains found outside a small village could be those of a man missing for four months.
The body parts were discovered by gardai near Rostellan, on the R630 between Midleton and Whitegate in Cork.
The location is about 5km from where officers carried out an extensive search for Kieran Quilligan last year.
The scene has been preserved pending a technical analysis and the remains were due to be examined by the State Pathologist
yesterday. While the body has not been identified, it’s understood gardai are assessing if they could be Mr Quillian.
He was last spotted on CCTV at St Finbarr’s Place in Cork on the night of September 1.
He was reported missing by the Cork Simon Community three days later.
In the footage, Mr Quillian, who is from the northside of the city, was last seen in the company of another man but since then, there have been no confirmed sightings.
Searches were carried out in the last few months with Garda Superintendent Michael Comyns making a public statement two weeks after he was reported missing.
Supt Comyns said Mr Quillian “can’t have disappeared into thin air,” but admitted gardai were unable to trace him leaving the area around St Stephen’s Place.
A number of derelict sites in the vicinity of St Finbarr’s Cathedral were searched, as well as segments of the River Lee and the harbour near Whitegate.
Kieran’s family have been kept informed of all the developments via a family liaison officer.
A Garda spokesperson said yesterday: “Investigations into establishing the identity of the deceased are ongoing and the area continues to be cordoned off for forensic and technical examination.”
