Don’t break the habit

We’re stuck in culinary rut in mornings

ONE in five of us have eaten the same breakfast every day for FIVE YEARS, a survey found.

While the Irish are a nation of breakfast-lovers, with three-quarters looking forward to the first meal of the day, many of us are stuck in a rut.

Research by plant-based food firm Alpro found one-fifth eat the same thing every morning – usually toast.

Those who eat a healthy breakfasts­uch as eggs, oatmeal, yoghurt and wholemeal bread have a reduced risk of obesity and heart disease. Eating a healthy breakfast is associated with long-term weight maintenanc­e.

But most of us are on repeat with 44% of those surveyed saying the reason for having the same breakfast is because it is part of their routine.

Another 22% admit they’re on autopilot and don’t know what else to have.

Our top breakfast options include toast (40%), cereal (34%), porridge (29%) and eggs (21%) with tea (33%) and coffee (29%) a basic starter.

Half of respondent­s said they are more adventurou­s at dinner time and almost the same number (48%) said they lacked inspiratio­n in the morning.

Yet the majority (57%) want to be more creative and add a flavour or twist to what’s known as the most important meal of the day, The survey was taken by 1,000 adults in January.

Alpro have teamed up with cookbook authors The Daly Dish, to show how small changes will make breakfast special.

Gina and Karol Daly say there are innovative ways to “break free of the culinary monotony”.
