New planets like Smarties not spheres

NEW planets which form around stars are shaped like a Smartie instead of being spherical, scientists have revealed.

The flattened shape was discovered when scientists used computer simulation­s to model the formation of new planets.

This is the first time scientists have used this type of modelling.

Dr Dimitris Stamatello­s, from the University of Central Lancashire, said: “We had always assumed that they were spherical.

“We were very surprised that they turned out to be oblate spheroids, pretty similar to Smarties.”
