NEW planets which form around stars are shaped like a Smartie instead of being spherical, scientists have revealed.
The flattened shape was discovered when scientists used computer simulations to model the formation of new planets.
This is the first time scientists have used this type of modelling.
Dr Dimitris Stamatellos, from the University of Central Lancashire, said: “We had always assumed that they were spherical.
“We were very surprised that they turned out to be oblate spheroids, pretty similar to Smarties.”
