BISHOP’S 1,400FT SKI FALL
DES Bishop was rushed to hospital after falling 1,400 feet – the equivalent of five football fields – while skiing in the US.
The Irish American comedian, 48, plunged from the top of the Highland Bowl in Aspen in Colorado last week.
Des, who was born in New York and moved to Ireland as a teenager, suffered a broken fibula and torn ACL.
Speaking on the Berner Phone podcast, he said: “I was at the mountain early and I hiked up to top of the Highland Bowl which is over 1,200 feet above sea level. It went great but I was very tired.
“I had a really bad fall. I fell 1,400 feet from the top of the Highland Bowl. I couldn’t stop myself.
“One of my skis didn’t pop off. I twisted my knee. It turns out I broke my fibula and I’ve probably torn my ACL.
“I just want to point out I’ve been skiing since my early 20s and this is my first real injury. It happens.
“I also want to point out the hike was way too tough. I shouldn’t have done it.”
Des said he wasn’t able to stop himself or break his fall.
The former Dancing With The Stars contestant said: “The fall was nothing.
But the whole mountain was freaking out.
“I fell five football fields. I kept getting pace. Just tumbling. Disastrous fall.
“I just would not stop. I was like ‘oh my God, is this ever going to stop?’. I just kept going. Halfway down when I wasn’t stopping, I was very conscious of just breathing because I kept getting the wind knocked out of me. It was a nightmare.
Every now and then I would flip. Sliding on my back was fine but I would flip. I avalanched myself. It was so bad.”
The funnyman, who is married to US reality TV star Hannah Berner, also revealed he was recognised before the fall by a nurse who helped him.
He said: “I got to the top and I was getting ready to go and this blonde girl was like ‘oh my God, are you Hannah Berner’s boyfriend?’ at the top of the mountain.
“Her name is Kinzy and she actually checked my neck and did an overall body check and then the rescue guys came.”
