FAMILY HEALTH BOMBSHELL

- BY RUSSELL MYERS news@irishmirror.ie

His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his hospital procedure.

“He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible. His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

A Palace spokesman added: “The King has elected to make his diagnosis public once the schedule of treatment had begun, noting that as Prince of Wales he was patron of a number of cancer-related charities. His Majesty has often spoken publicly in support of cancer patients, their loved ones and the wonderful health professionals who help care for them.”

Royal sources confirmed Charles personally notified his siblings, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and

THE King has enjoyed good health for most of his life but there have been episodes of illness and quite a few accidents – many of them polo-related.

Charles was 13 when he had his appendix out in 1962, saying later that he got to hospital “just in time before the thing exploded”.

In 1980, he was thrown and kicked by his pony in a polo match. A cut needed six stitches and left a scar on his left cheek. He was hit in the throat in another polo match, making him lose his voice for 10 days.

In 1990, Charles broke his right arm falling during a polo match. And in 1992 he had surgery to fix torn cartilage in his left knee, again from a polo injury.

He broke a rib falling off a horse in 1998 and later that year had laser keyhole surgery on his right knee.

In 2001 he was knocked out when his horse threw him during polo – months after fracturing a shoulder bone falling from his horse at a fox hunt.

Hernia surgery followed in 2003 and in 2008 he had a non-cancerous growth removed from the bridge of his nose. Charles caught Covid in March 2020 but only had mild symptoms. He got it again in February 2022 but by then was triple-vaccinated.

Concern has been voiced at his “sausage fingers” amid fears they may be due to fluid build-up or other conditions. But they have never worried Charles, who wrote to a friend after William’s birth in 1982: “He really does look surprisingly appetising and has sausage fingers just like mine.”

Prince Edward, as well as his children, Prince William and Prince Harry, of his diagnosis.

The King had been recuperating at his Sandringham estate in Norfolk before returning to London yesterday to start treatment as an outpatient.

Charles last week had a three-day stay in hospital for his prostate care. He also made that public in the hope more men would come forward who

experience signs of an enlarged gland, such as frequent toilet trips.

The Princess of Wales was in the same hospital to have an abdominal operation and she left on the same day as her father-in-law. Kate is now recovering at home.

William is due to return to public engagements tomorrow after an extended period of leave to care for their three children.

It shows it is indiscriminate and there should be no shame in seeking help and advice
