LEAGUE of Ireland hopefuls Derry City have been dealt a blow ahead of the 2024 campaign with the news that midfielder Sadou Diallo faces up to two months on the sidelines.

The former

England underage int ernational suffered a knee ligament injury during a pre-season friendly against Finn

Harps late last month.

Footage of the tackle that caused the injury and the melee that followed can be seen on the Derry Journal website, which first reported the news of Diallo’s potential lay-off.

After an initial assessment of the problem, the 24-year-old was thought to have suffered bruising, but an MRI scan later showed that he sustained a torn meniscus.

Diallo signed for Derry City from Forest Green 18 months ago and quickly established himself as a key player at the Ryan Mcbride Brandywell.

He recently extended his contract by another two years. After signing his new deal in November, Diallo said: “I feel like the team is building something special. It wasn’t to be last season but going forward I think we’re going to go from strength to strength.

“The manager believes in me and I’m really happy to be in the city. I’ve made friends outside the club and of course inside the club as well.

“I feel we have a strong squad and it goes without saying that I want to win the league.

“So I want to be a part of that hopefully next year and I feel we will be pushing on to achieve great things.”

Meanwhile, Derry City have confirmed the departure of assistant manager Paddy Mclaughlin.

The former Cliftonville boss has left the Ryan Mcbride Brandywell by mutual consent.
