HOT SUMMER CUP SIZZLER

Leeds turn on extra-time style to set up clash with Chelsea or Villa

- BY MATT BAMSEY

WINGER Crysencio Summerville leapt off the bench to fire Leeds into the fifth round after they had suffered a scare at Home Park.

Georginio Rutter combined with fellow substitute Summerville, who curled home his 13th goal of the season in the 97th minute to break Plymouth hearts.

The same pair combined for the 111th-minute clincher as Summerville set up Rutter and his scuffed effort went in off the inside of the post.

An own goal from Ryan Hardie sealed it for Leeds three minutes from time

The victory hands Leeds a trip to either Aston Villa or Chelsea, who meet in their replay tonight.

Brendan Galloway had fired a Plymouth equaliser to force extra time.

That was after Wilfried Gnonto stepped out of the shadows to put Leeds in front in the 66th minute after the visitors twice hit the crossbar.

Gnonto handed in a transfer request last summer and has been playing second fiddle to first-choice strikers Patrick Bamford and Summerville.

But he produced a cool finish in front of the massed ranks of visiting fans.

Yet, just when it looked as though Daniel Farke’s side had seen off the Pilgrims, Galloway struck from close range in the 78th minute.

Morgan Whittaker swung over a free-kick, Ashley Phillips hooked the ball back into the six-yard box and Galloway chested home.

But Leeds must have wondered if they were cursed after Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe both rattled the woodwork in the first half.

And, deep into stoppage time, substitute Joe Gelhardt hit the post which saw the tie go into an extra 30 minutes. Joseph conjured a touch of the sublime in the 15th minute as he twisted past Lewis Gibson before his fierce effort was touched onto the bar by Conor Hazard.

Leeds were denied by the woodwork again in the 19th minute, Glen Kamara setting up Piroe on the edge of the box.

The midfielder let fly with a thunderous strike which brushed off Galloway before rattling the bar. Piroe swept past Gibson and forced a comfortable save out of Hazard in the opening stages of the second half.

And Piroe was in the thick of the action again in the 53rd minute, only to be denied by the sprawling frame of Gibson.

The breakthrough came when Callum Wright was pickpocketed by Sam Byram before Glen Kamara set up Gnonto.

The winger threaded a shot through the legs of Phillips and into the bottom corner.

But Argyle responded in the 78th minute when Galloway ghosted into the six-yard box to plunder the leveller.
