Choose the perfect Valentine’s present

DON’T buy into the general notion that women don’t like getting underwear for Valentine’s Day.

In fact, February 14 is one of the peak sales times for those in the lingerie business.

We love it – but only when our lovers get it right.

A recent study showed 15% of women dreaded getting knickers and bras, as men, in particular, so often get it wrong.

It’s a lovely, indulgent, special gift to receive and shows a relationship with a sexy spark, so don’t be put off.

But how to know what women want?

Queen of lingerie Susan Moylett, who owns the exclusive Susan Hunter boutique in

Dublin, has some buying advice.

Susan says: “My advice when buying lingerie as a gift, or as a gift for yourself, is to pick a good store so you know you’re on safe ground.

“Pick something you like. At least then, someone likes it. It’s almost impossible to anticipate someone else’s taste. And it can always be changed if you’ve gone to a good store.”

The Marks and Spencer Rosie Huntington-whiteley range is romantic and sensual, with gorgeous matching sets for as little as €55.

Susan Hunter has superluxe, high-end lingerie at manageable prices, at least for a special occasion. Check out the Prima Donna Madison, a more feminine bra with support for the bigger bust (€99.90) and the hot Marie Jo Jaroo full cup bra (€110). Home shopping company Oxendales has an array that includes the peek-a-boo Figleaves pulse lace underwired plunge bra, for just €39. Ann Summers has great value and style for the more flamboyant woman, with daring sheer babydolls and colourful matching sets; while TK Maxx goes for cool with a variety of lace bodies and bralets.

Those who prefer the minimalist look will like Dunnes’ functional and chic – and cheap – sets in black and nude.
