RUGBY UNION GUINNESS SIX NATIONS CAELAN’S A PERFECT LEADOR..

- BY MICHAEL SCULLY

ANDY FARRELL has no fears for Caelan Doris after Ireland’s new captain admitted he got it wrong in his first outing as Leinster skipper.

Doris, 25, insisted just weeks before the Six

Nations started that he was down the pecking order to lead Ireland at Test level.

But Peter O’mahony’s calf problem has prompted Farrell to appoint the Mayo man as skipper for the clash with Italy – after he took on the responsibility for the final quarter in Marseille last week.

“Andy told me on Tuesday and I’m delighted to be in this position for the week,” Doris (above) said yesterday.

“Lots of nerves but lots of excitement and it’s helped by having such a good group around me and such good leaders. It’s been made easy by them.”

Farrell revealed putting Doris in the top leadership role was something that he started thinking about at the World Cup.

“We’re excited to give him the reins and let’s see what he can do with it,” he said.

Previously, however, Doris confessed that he got it wrong on his captaincy debut for Leinster in their New Year’s Day loss to

Ulster at the RDS. Promoted to the role late in the week after James Ryan’s injury withdrawal, the back row questioned referee Frank Murphy on several decisions when the official was in the right.

“We obviously speak about it,” said Farrell yesterday. “Caelan is a humble type of guy and he would always say that because he would always be his biggest critic.

“That’s what you would expect of someone who wants to learn and get better.

“I know that I made many a call – and I probably wasn’t as humble as that on my first outing as a captain when I was playing. I’ve no doubt he would have learned from that massively. He’s a thinker and will have been thinking about how that experience went for him.”
