‘Gentleman’ Michael, 61 laid to rest

- BY NICOLA DONNELLY

THE funeral of a murdered man yesterday heard he was “a kind-hearted gentleman” and would do anything for anyone.

Michael Foley, 61, originally from Scartagh in Clonakilty, Co Cork, had moved to his sheltered accommodation at Annville in Macroom last year.

Last Tuesday, a care worker who went to check on him found him in a pool of blood in the kitchen.

A murder investigation is now under way after an postmortem confirmed he suffered a violent death.

Chief mourners at Mr Foley’s Requiem Mass at the Church of Immaculate Conception in Clonakilty included his heartbroken dad Mickie, his daughters, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

PLEASANT

The father-of-four was also described as an outgoing and pleasant man who liked to socialise with friends at home.

Fr Fergus Tuohy said the death had shocked and saddened everyone, but told mourners that while their lives had changed with Mr Foley’s death, they would remember him every day.

Following the Mass, he was buried in St Mary’s Cemetery in Clonakilty.

Mr Foley’s tragic death is the second to have hit his family in recent years as in October 2018 his younger brother Timmy, 44, died after being stabbed 28 times by his ex-wife Rita O’driscoll.

O’driscoll is now serving a life sentence for the murder of her ex-husband at Dan Corkery Place in Macroom.

She had claimed she had acted in self defence and appealed her conviction.

However, her appeal was later dismissed in the Court of Appeal, which ruled that the trial judge’s rulings had been “unimpeachable”.

As the garda investigation continue into Mr Foley’s murder, detectives have appealed to any witnesses or anyone who may have information to contact detectives in Macroom, Co Cork, on 026 20590.
