IDEAL MAHOMES SHOW

Kelce hails the Chiefs ‘magic’ QB as he finds a way to lead team to a Super Bowl victory

- FROM KEITH WEBSTER in Las Vegas

TRAVIS KELCE labelled Patrick Mahomes the “magic” man after the Chiefs quarterback engineered a thrilling win in Super Bowl LVIII.

Having been bullied by the 49ers in the first half in Las Vegas, and having trailed for most of the game, Mahomes led them to a field goal with three seconds left that tied the game at 19-19 and sent it to the extra period.

Then, after San Francisco scored first in overtime with a field goal, Mahomes marched KC down the other end and won the game when he threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman (right).

Kelce, who had a quiet first half but ended with nine catches for 93 yards, said of the confidence Mahomes gives the team: “I take it for granted.

“I know we’re in every single game I’ve ever played in with him, no matter what the score is, no matter how much time is left. That guy’s got magic in his right arm.

“Never a doubt in my mind, baby. We got the best quarterback in the league. We got the best offensive mind in the league [coach Andy Reid]. And we got the most determination of any team in the NFL.”

However, Kelce was stunned by how much of a challenge San Francisco provided, a challenge that had them seconds from victory more than once.

“We know how to go and get it, and they didn’t. That being said, I got nothing but respect for the 49ers.

“They showed a lot more than even I imagined.

“There’s going to be a lot of words being thrown around, but that team was every bit as deserving as we were. And I got a lot of respect for them, their coaches and how they go about their business.

That game went all the way down to the wire for a reason.”

Mahomes was voted Most Valuable Player for a performance that saw him throw for 333 yards and two touchdowns, while running for another 66 yards.

He said: “I hope people remember not only the greatness that we have in the field, but the way that we’ve done it. We enjoy it every single day. We have fun. We play hard. And it’s not always pretty, but we just continue to fight to the end.

“We enjoy what we can do every single day to bring the best out of each other.”

And having become the first team since Tom Brady’s Patriots 19 years ago to successfully defend the title, Mahomes immediately starting talking about three in a row.

“I’m going to celebrate tonight. I’m going to celebrate at the parade. And then I’m going to do whatever I can to be back in this game next year and try for that three-peat.

“Tom said it best – once you win that championship and you have those parades and you get those rings, you’re not the champion any more. You have to come back with that same mentality.

“I learned from guys like that that have been the greatest of all time at the top level and so that’s my mindset.

“I’m going to celebrate with my guys because of how we’ve done this but then we’re going to work to get back to this game next year.”
