A BLISTERING first half that included a three-goal salvo inspired Ulster University past UCD to capture their sixth Sigerson Cup at Austin Stack Park last night.

The Dublin college had no answer to the Canavan brothers, Darragh and Ruairi, and Derry’s Niall Loughlin.

Two green flags in the space of 60 seconds propelled Ulster into a position that they were subsequently never to lose.

In the 12th minute Conor Cush and Ruairi Canavan cut open the UCD defence for Loughlin to finish low to the net with a drive.

Gathering the resultant kick-out, Barry Dillon’s charges stormed through again. Ciaran Daly was foiled by a fine save from UCD goalkeeper Killian Roche but Oisin Mccann buried the rebound.

UCD responded with three unanswered points but Ulster’s third goal, clinically dispatched by Ben Mccarron, killed off any growing momentum by half-time at 3-6 to 0-6.

When the winners began the second half with points from the Canavan siblings to move 11 clear, it appeared that the destination of the spoils was done and dusted.

But six white flags on the trot from Daire Cregg (3), David Garland (2) and sub Liam Costello reduced the deficit to five before the Ulster side ended a 13-minute barren spell with a Josh Largo Ellis point.
