Does your teen need skincare?
Hello and welcome to my new weekly beauty column! In the first edition I’ll be tackling teenage skin. The British Association of Dermatologists has urged caution after finding children as young as eight are using potentially damaging skincare products.
Online platforms such as Tiktok and Youtube have been blamed, as inappropriate products can be peddled by top influencers. These are often designed solely for adult skin, containing potent active ingredients like retinol, or with overly rich formulas.
YOUNG SKIN: THE LOWDOWN
Dr Julia Krasnaya, dermatologist at Evolution Aesthetics Clinic (evoclinic. ae), shares her advice:
What’s the problem with a child using adult products?
There’s a risk of irritation or allergic reactions. Young skin tends to be more sensitive.
Unnecessary use of potent actives may disrupt the natural balance of the skin and interfere with its natural development too.
What should be completely avoided?
Harsh chemicals, excessive exfoliation and heavy-duty anti-ageing products are generally unnecessary for children and teens.
Avoid strong acids, retinoids, or high concentrations of certain active ingredients.
What is an appropriate skincare routine for a young person?
Think simple: a gentle cleanser to remove dirt and oil, a lightweight moisturiser to maintain hydration, and a broad-spectrum SPF to protect against sun damage.
