ALLIANZ NFL MATCHBOX: DIV 1
Kerry v Mayo Tralee, 7.30pm (RTE2)
KERRY will surely be up for this one having been beaten decisively twice by Mayo last year.
The first loss, in the corresponding
League fixture in Castlebar when Kerry were still finding their feet won’t have cut too deep, but relinquishing their 28-year unbeaten Championship record in Killarney later in the year certainly did.
Mayo rode their luck to take both points against Dublin and may run out of road here. VERDICT: Kerry
v
Croke Park, 5pm (TG4) DESSIE FARRELL said after the loss to Mayo that he wasn’t going to put the gun to players’ heads about maintaining Division One status but, if they suffer a third straight loss with Kerry and Derry coming down the tracks, his conviction may be put to the test.
Roscommon haven’t started the League with the same zest as last year and look vulnerable to the drop themselves.
VERDICT: Dublin
Dublin Roscommon Derry v Monaghan Celtic Park, 5pm
MICKEY HARTE (below) clearly targeted the first two League games and enjoyed the maximum return, but it may leave them vulnerable here with the Glen players given the opportunity to let their hair down in the last fortnight.
Monaghan were well beaten by Kerry after their stirring opening win over Dublin but eked out a draw at this venue in last year’s Championship and shouldn’t be overawed.
VERDICT: Derry
Tyrone v Galway
Tomorrow, Omagh, 1.45pm (TG4) ALREADY, it’s looking as though Galway have their work cut out to stay in the top division. Minus some key players, they probably need at least another five points from as many games to stay up. Tyrone are hardly the most formidable side in the division themselves and may be dragged into the relegation conversation yet, but it’s still difficult to see Galway taking anything in Omagh.
