¤33million drug seizure

GARDAI are continuing to question a businessman and the son of a former politician over the discovery of crystal meth worth ¤32.8million.

The two men began a second detention period of a further 72 hours at 10.30am yesterday after it was granted by Kerry District Court.

Their arrests came after officers made the sensational discovery inside a shipping container in Cork Port on Friday morning.

The meth is believed to have been destined for Australia and was being held here on behalf of the ruthless Sinaloa cartel – once led by El Chapo.

One of the arrested men is a well-known businessman who has not come to Garda attention in the past.

The other man is the son of a former politician who is seen as a close associate of Morris O’shea Salazar, an Irishmexican citizen who heads the European operation of the Sinaloa Cartel.

EXTRADITE

The man is also well-known to gardai and has a violent past with prior convictions for assault.

Gardai and Revenue Officers seized 546kg of the synthetic drug which will be analysed by Forensic Science Ireland.

Gardai from the Kerry and Cork Divisional Drugs Units along with local gardai were involved in the massive operation.

Follow-up searches in Cork and Kerry including one at a business premises led to the seizure of two firearms and the arrest of two men.

Both are in their 40s and are currently being held at Garda stations in the southern region of the country.

The Sinaloa Cartel is considered the largest narcotrafficking gang in the world.

Drugs kingpin El Chapo is currently behind bars in the United States.

Last year, we revealed Chilean investigators want to extradite O’shea, who was nicknamed “Mexican” when he was growing up in Killorglin in Kerry, from Mexico to face serious charges.

Jason Hennessy Snr was shot on Christmas Eve

Gardai display recovered weapons

GARDAI suspect associates of slain Jason Hennessy Snr used a South Dublin mob to source these loaded guns for a revenge gangland hit.

Several people have now been charged before the courts in relation to Sherry’s alleged murder.

Associates of Hennessy Snr are thought to be targeting those they believe may have facilitated Sherry in carrying out the hit that night.

Officers fear a major escalation in a bitter gangland dispute and associates of both sides are being closely monitored amid those concerns.

In a statement gardai confirmed the seizure of three firearms, as well as the arrest of a man and a woman.

They said: “On Friday afternoon, February 16, Gardai attached to the Blanchardstown District stopped a car on the Old Navan Road in Dublin 15.

“Two occupants of the car were found to be in possession of a pistol and ammunition. The firearm and ammunition were seized by investigating Gardai.

“A man (aged in his 20s) and a woman (aged in her 30s) were arrested at the scene and are currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, at a Garda station in Dublin.

“Follow-up searches were conducted at two addresses in the Dublin Region on Friday evening, February 16, and Saturday morning, February 17.

“During the course of these searches, two more firearms were seized by investigating Gardai including a submachine gun, sawn-off shotgun, as well as ammunition.

“All three seized firearms and ammunition are subject to analysis by the Ballistics Section of the Garda National Technical Bureau.”

Sources told the Irish Mirror officers fear an incident in which a man and women were arrested was linked to attempts to transfer weapons to associates of the late Hennessy Snr.

A submachine gun, sawn-off shotgun and ammunition were discovered in follow-up searches at different addresses connected to the gang.

Images of the weapons have since been released by An Garda Siochana.

Hennessy Snr died two weeks after he was shot by Tristan Sherry at Brownes Steakhouse in Blanchardstown, West Dublin, on Christmas Eve.

It is feared that incensed close associates of the slain 48-yearold are out for revenge – and got into bed with a south

Tristan Sherry city based mob to source these weapons before going after those they blame for his death.

A man from the south-west area of Dublin was last night being questioned on suspicion of transporting a gun.

It came after gardai intercepted a vehicle he was travelling in with a woman and a young child in the Mulhuddart area on Friday.

A source said: “There is movement in the underworld. [Associates of Hennessy] seem to be sourcing firepower for a future hit.”

Gunman Sherry, 26, was killed inside Brownes restaurant after he opened fire on Hennessy Snr in front of terrified families enjoying a Christmas Eve meal.
