A BOY was seriously injured after he was allegedly attacked with a hurley by an All-ireland winner.

The Irish Mirror has been told the lad, who was 12 at the time, was so badly hurt he was temporarily confined to a wheelchair after the reported attack last October.

The ex-player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on Monday and questioned at a Garda station before being released without charge.

But officers are close to finishing their probe and will soon send a file to the DPP.

The Irish Mirror has learned the alleged incident happened at a business premises last year.

It’s understood the suspect had a connection to the property and had fitted a CCTV system after kids had repeatedly gathered there.

Sources say the suspect then noticed around five youngsters at the site when he was checking the CCTV and went to challenge them.

While four of them fled, one boy was still there when the EX-GAA star arrived on the scene.

The child was then allegedly attacked and received “significant injuries” to his body and face.

He was brought to hospital where he was treated for a broken collar bone and facial injuries.

Gardai have seized CCTV footage as part of their investigation.

A spokesman said: “Officers investigating an alleged assault on a male child on Thursday, October 5, 2023, arrested a man on Monday.

“He was detained at a Garda station under the Criminal Justice Act 1984. He has since been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Office of the DPP.

“We are continuing to appeal to anyone with any information in relation to this incident to contact the Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.”
