Survey outs most brutal brogues

A STUDY released to coincide with the trailer for Lindsay Lohan’s new movie has compiled the worst screen attempts at an Irish accent.

Lohan’s flick, Irish Wish, goes live on Netflix on March 15.

The rom-com, filmed on location at Lough Tay, the Cliffs of Moher and in Westport, tells the story of shy book editor Maddie Kelly, played by Lohan, 37, whose best friend is marrying the Irishman she loves.

Days before the pair are set to marry, Maddie makes a spontaneous wish for true love, only to wake up as the bride-to-be.

But while the trailer rates highly on the cheese front, it has mainly escaped criticism for the Irish accents on show – largely because most of the characters in it are American. However, analysis by Preply of 234,000 reviews of the most popular movies on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes spanning multiple decades and genres saw a top six of terrible Irish twangs compiled.

Jamie Dornan’s 2020 effort Wild Mountain Thyme came out worst of all, with 34.5% of all bad reviews referring to some poor attempts at the Irish accent, even though 41-year-old Dornan himself is from Co Down.

Following that in second place is Mary Reilly, which stars Julia Roberts and was released in 1996.

In the film, Julia, 56, plays the titular character, an Irish nurse, who falls in love with a doctor. Some 55 of the 249 negative reviews mention Roberts’ awful intonation.

The rest of the top six list is made up of 1992’s Far and Away starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, 2000’s Snatch starring Brad Pitt, 2002’s Gangs of New York starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Cameron Diaz, and 2007’s P.S. I Love You starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler.

The study also looked at the overall most complained-about accents in films. Taking the top spot on that list is House of Gucci. Starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver, the film was wellreceived but was criticised for the cast’s questionable Italian efforts.

Other movies widely criticised are Alexander starring Colin Farrell, Red Sparrow for its Russian accents, One Day for its British, and Elvis for its Dutch accents.
