Jack Brennan dusts off his trainers for marathon weekend full of colour & fun in Caribbean

-

The first step is always the hardest as the old saying goes. Well I’m afraid I’ll have to respectfully disagree with that. How about the last step is the hardest during a 5k race you haven’t trained for?

Yes of course I signed up for my local Parkrun (I can see the course from my window!) but as for actually getting my trainers on and doing it, I always made an excuse.

Something I regretted of course when I was about half way through the Run Barbados race. Mind you, what a place to do your first 5k! The stunning coastal route and 27C with breathless humidity was quite different to the 2C and drizzle back home in Blighty.

When I eventually crossed the finish line and my medal was placed around my neck, it brought back good memories of winning trophies on the sports field at school.

Come to think of it, that may well be the last time I did any meaningful exercise barring a few failed gym membership sign-ups.

With life whizzing by and two young kids to look after, fitness is the last thing on the agenda these days.

The jewel of the Caribbean is home to Run Barbados, in its 40th year this year, it is a spectacle of colour, noise and fun.

Bob Marley’s greatest hits belt out of a speaker from a trailer at the start of the race. Of course there are world class athletes at the front of the pack aiming for glory, but for most this race is about enjoying the spectacular scenery on the coastal roads.

For any serious runners out there who are looking for somewhere different to do a marathon, look no further than Barbados. Take time out after your run to enjoy the world class beaches from Bathsheba Beach, where you’ll be tempted just like King David to enjoy her delights, to the stunning Archers Bay in St Lucy, you’ll not be stuck for choice.

One of the highlights of our post-run activities was without doubt a catamaran cruise setting off from
