Struggle to fill ‘poisoned chalice’ post

- BY PAT FLANAGAN

RTE is now desperate to find a replacement for its chair Siun Ni Raghallaigh after the fiasco surrounding her resignation.

The position, which pays just €31,000, is described as a “poisoned chalice” by many media analysts because of the turmoil at the station and will not be easily filled.

Larry Bass, chief executive of production company Shinawil, said at the weekend because of the way Ms Ni Raghallaigh was treated, the national broadcaster will have to “go down on bended knee” to get someone to fill her role.

Those who could be considered for the post could include Niamh Brennan, the spouse of former Justice Minister Michael Mcdowell.

With her background when it comes to saving organisations she certainly has the skills needed but whether she would accept the job is another matter.

The chief executive of An Post, David Mcredmond, has also been mentioned because of his success at the semistate company.

He also has much experience in broadcasting as he was in command at TV3 in its start-up phase.

Former RTE journalist Mark Little could also be in the running as he is considered a go-getter and entrepreneur as well as having a deep knowledge of broadcasting.

He will be best known to the public as the presenter of RTE’S Prime Time before he took leave of absence to pursue other avenues. Mr Little went on to develop a digital media project called Storyful which he sold to News International.

RTE’S Managing Director of News and Current Affairs and board member Deirdre Mccarthy, above, could also be a contender for the post.

Another ideal candidate could be David Hall, known for restoring order in ailing charities.

Meanwhile, broadcaster Ivan Yates has called for Ryanair boss Michael O’leary to be given the job.
