Ex-soccer star Pat: ‘I honestly thought this was it as they were kicking the daylights out of me’

GARDAI are hunting two men and a woman after a former soccer star was brutally attacked while walking home.

Ex-drogheda United midfielder and coach Pat “Mini” Mohan, 59, was left unconscious for three to four minutes after being viciously assaulted on Sunday evening.

He had gone out to buy a bottle of wine to celebrate Liverpool winning the League Cup and was set upon by the thugs as he passed the entrance of pub carpark in Drogheda, Co Louth.

He needed 30 stitches in his leg and suffered cuts to his face in the unprovoked attack.

Pat was haemorrhaging blood when a local nurse came to his help at his home 100 yards away in Glenmore Drive part of the town and stopped the bleeding before an ambulance arrived.

He said: “I was walking along the footpath when this car shot out of the pub car park onto the footpath in front of me.

“I asked if I could pass and he told me to go around his car.

“There was a man and a woman, both Irish and I could see they were after being with a gang of youths seconds earlier. The man suddenly opened the door and jumped out of the car and attacked me.

“Next second a fella ran out of nowhere and busted me with his head at full force in the face.

“I fell to the ground and conked out as they were beating me.

“When I woke up I had a massive gash on the knee right through to the bone and there was blood everywhere.

“I honestly thought this was it as they were kicking the daylights out of me. I am in absolute agony all day with pains everywhere. I don’t know who they are or why they did it. This is normally a peaceful area where nothing like this happens. I’d say they were in their late 20s to early 20s.”

Pat said he got the car reg shortly after he woke up and it sped off.

He added: “The Gardai are confident they will track them down, I would hate for this to happen to anyone else.

“I am very lucky that I am still alive. The medics said if the injuries I had on my leg were on my head I would have died.”

Former Drogheda stars Gel Martin and Sean Thornton called to his house yesterday to offer him and his wife Audrey support.
