BILLIONAIRE BLUES ARE NO MAT-CH

- BY NEIL MCLEMAN

CHELSEA have spent £1billion in the transfer market and did not have a striker as good as Mateo Joseph last night.

The England Under-20 hitman had never scored a senior goal before this FA Cup tie between two old rivals.

But the second cousin of Emile Heskey took just eight minutes to get off the mark at Stamford Bridge – and then headed home a second after the break as the Championship side refused to give in after falling behind.

Joseph (below), 20, was born in Spain to Anglospanish parents and played for Racing Santander but has chosen to play for England.

And with Crysencio Summerville and Patrick Bamford kept on the bench to protect injuries, he was given the chance to show Chelsea what a difference a real centre-forward can make to a team.

There are still banners paying homage to Kerry Dixon and Didier Drogba in the Matthew Harding Stand. But despite scoring the first Chelsea goal last night, Nicolas Jackson is not a worthy successor while Christopher Nkunku was out injured again.

Neither of these two teams are near the level from the glory days of their great rivalry although Daniel Farke’s side are set to return to the top flight after nine consecutive wins in the Championship.

And the Yorkshire club’s pinky/peach kit would not have been worn by Don Revie’s team.

Before the first FA Cup tie between Leeds and Chelsea since the 1970 final, Eddie Gray and Ron ‘Chopper’

Harris were reunited pitchside to recall the notorious replay where the Scot was kicked out of the game.

Last night, it was the turn of his teenage grand nephew Archie to leave his early mark on the Blues with a more acceptable tackle which set up Joseph’s opening goal.

Joseph nodded home his second in his breakthrough performance although the Blues grabbed a late win.

After signing a new contract until 2028 last month, Joseph is sure to take more chances in the Premier League.
