MEATH UP FOR ROAR EMOTIONS

- BY KARL O’KANE

COLM O’ROURKE says it’s great for his young squad to experience

“the traditional Meath roar” at

Pairc Tailteann again.

The Royals supremo (above) believes the Navan venue had gone quiet in recent times.

But two come from behind victories on the trot at Pairc Tailteann over local rivals Louth and Kildare had the top of the town venue rocking again over the past fortnight.

It leaves Meath on five points from four games, knowing that one more point will almost certainly leave them safe in Division 2.

However, they face another big derby date tomorrow night, their toughest local battle yet, against Cavan at Breffni Park.

Meath’s only road trip so far in Division 2 ended in a 12 point defeat in Armagh so they have plenty to prove on their travels.

They were fortunate to start with three home games out of four and made the most of home comforts, bagging five points out of a possible six in Navan.

“It’s great for the players to experience that sort of traditional Meath roar and a big Meath support in Pairc Tailteann, which had sort of gone away for quite a while,” said O’rourke, in his second year as boss.

“The supporters are feeling sort of like they’re getting value for money from the young players.

“It may not be all they’d like, or what we’d like, but we’re building slowly.

“This is the course we’re on and I think if we stick with it, we will do OK in the next year or two.”

Meath trailed Kildare by a point after 62 minutes of last Sunday’s encounter, but held the visitors scoreless until the end, while tagging on the final four points of the game.

O’rourke said: “We defended very well in the last five minutes [against Kildare]. They blocked down all routes to goal.

“I was very pleased with that and we were a bit more disciplined too than maybe we were last week. It’s a great sign.”
