MARLEY AND ME
HOT HOTEL Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort & Spa, Montego Bay, Jamaica
VIBE
When Christopher Columbus landed in Jamaica on May 4, 1494, he described it in his log as “the fairest island that eyes have beheld”.
As I lounged on a sunbed, witnessing the scorching day surrender to a vibrant sunset over Montego Bay, I couldn’t help but agree.
The sky looked like something straight out of a Windows screensaver. Except, in Montego Bay, your work laptop will feel miles away.
At this resort, you will have one job and one job only: beach.
And this five-star Palladium Hotel Group property on the island’s northwest coast is perfectly placed to assist. Somehow at this 9.5-hectare beachfront resort, you’re never further than 100 yards away from hearing the opening guitar riff of Bob Marley’s One Love – the Sweet Caroline of Jamaica.
The beauty lies in its versatility, where guests can embark on very contrasting stays.
For those seeking solitude and serenity, secluded spots along the tranquil beach await. And for the lovestruck, private beachfront dinners can be arranged, guaranteed to set hearts aglow like the vibrant sunset. It would be an excellent location for weddings.
On the flip side, if you’re in the mood for sociable adventures, you can dive into the buzzing entertainment scene. Think silent discos, fire shows on the beach, or engaging discussions with fellow beachgoers on the best rum punch flavours at the aptly named Sunset Cove.
As respite from the beach, take an afternoon splash at one of the four main pools – one of which is the largest pool in Jamaica, which has the built-in temptation of a swim-up bar.
Staff were generally warm, welcoming, and friendly – albeit for those in a rush, just a little patience may be required.
STYLE
The main draw of this luxury hotel is its privileged location – with its exclusive access to four pristine beaches. And the resort’s recent multimillion refurbishment really makes the most of it.
The makeover upgraded the 537 rooms, including 48 suites which now have a terrace, private pool and sea views. The design concept combines timelessness, elegance, and colonial touches.
The coral-pink mansion-like apartments stood proudly amid immaculate lawns and gardens.
Cool marble flooring in the rooms provided a refreshing respite from the scorching 30C heat.
FOOD
It was rich with options, offering 11 restaurants, including seven à la carte and four buffet-style.
While my Jamaican hotel experience was filled with many delights, it lacked some of the authentic island punch and zest I had hoped to savour during my stay.
But a standout was the Indian restaurant, Bhogali, renowned for its delicious naan bread.
For breakfast, Mobay served a classic “everything” buffet, where I indulged in many a doughnut, just the way Bob Marley preferred them – with jammin’.
For a more rustic vibe, there are two huts by the beach which have the best jerk chicken grilled right in front of you. And thanks to all-inclusive, you’ll be able to savour it all without ever reaching for your wallet.
SPA
The Zentropia Palladium Spa & Wellness centre offers a delightful escape with its Grecian-themed ambience and its outdoor pools are a serene oasis and never overcrowded.
While the massage did come at a fairly high price point, the quality was commendable, making it a worthwhile indulgence.
And a post-massage dip in the cold plunge-pools was a nice alternative to the always-warm
Caribbean.
A DAY OUT
Board a bamboo raft and gently float down a calm
three-mile stretch of the Martha Brae river. You can make a stop along the way to buy some trinkets from local sellers or grab another – you guessed it – rum punch.
The experience lasts about an hour and each raft accommodates two adults with passengers sitting on a throne-like chair which is quite literally fit for royalty – given Queen Elizabeth II once took this trip.
Your guide and rudder man stands at the front and uses a long bamboo pole to push the raft effortlessly along the meandering river. Or, when I gave it a go, straight into the riverbank. Back at the resort, spend time paddle boarding on waves smoother than Bob Marley’s vocals – guests have access to complimentary water sports such as snorkelling, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
If you’re looking to leave the cove, you can splash out on a catamaran. Or, you could do none of that – stay on the beach and order another rum.
