RUSSO GETS REVENGE...

Alessia strike so sweet for the Gunners

- BY IAN WINROW

JONAS EIDEVALL says Arsenal were on a revenge mission after Alessia Russo’s second-half strike boosted their WSL title challenge.

Eidevall’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of their north London rivals last December and the Gunners boss admits that added to his team’s motivation.

And they made amends for that loss in front of a sell-out crowd at the Emirates Stadium to stay within three points of the top of the table with seven games remaining.

Eidevall (below) said: “Three points is the most important thing but of course, we wanted revenge from the last game against them.

“I didn’t think it was deserved that we lost that game. Today, we had another strong performance and another strong display and it’s nice we could get the three points.

“We did (have a point to prove). We can be happy with our performance, except for the last 15 minutes of the game. We were letting the scoreline affect us too much.”

Tottenham’s Jessica Naz saw a firsthalf effort tipped on to the bar by Arsenal keeper Manuela Zinsberger. But Eidevall’s side dominated and England star

Russo provided the game’s decisive moment when she finished from close range four minutes after the break for her sixth league goal of the campaign.

The win provided the perfect boost ahead of Arsenal’s League Cup semi-final with Aston Villa and the trip to Chelsea in their next league outing.

Russo said: “It’s a big win. We knew that off the back of the international break we have some massive games coming up.

“We’ve got to get rested and recovered ready for Wednesday with a chance of us getting into a final which is really important for us as players.”
