DANGEROUS DROGS ARE OFF THE LEASH

- BY BARRY LANDY

DROGHEDA are off the mark for the season as they ended Bohs’ unbeaten start to the campaign.

Evan Weir’s 40-yard free kick, his second goal of the season, was the matchwinner for the Boyne to give Kevin Doherty’s team lift-off.

Earlier in the day, it was announced the club had bought back their old stadium from the FAI.

On a historic day for the Drogs, a big win means the celebrations will continue all weekend. Danny

Grant’s shocker of an own goal handed United the lead on the brink of half time. Completely unopposed at his own front post, he diverted a corner past Kacper Chorazka.

Given United’s only other lead this season had lasted 86 seconds, home fans were delirious when Weir (left) doubled their lead early in the second half. From 45 yards out, his free kick was allowed to bounce in the area and land inside the Polish goalkeeper’s upright.

Bohs were architects of their downfall for both Drogs goals but were back in it after the hour mark.

Andrew Wogan flailed when coming for a Jordan Flores corner and James Clarke, with his back to goal, hooked the ball into an unguarded net.

The teenage stopper came to his team’s rescue moments later after saving well at his near post from Adam Mcdonnell’s drive.

But despite Bohs halving the deficit, it was the hosts who stepped things up thereafter.

Darragh Markey’s burst forward ended in Zishim Bawa shooting just off target. Then Markey himself failed to test the goalkeeper after he evaded several Bohs men on the edge of the area.

Following a supporter ban in light of Cian Byrne being hit by a flare last month, there were only a smattering of away supporters at Weavers Park. They didn’t miss much as Declan Devine’s team hardly looked like levelling.
