A MAN has appeared in court in connection with a debs car crash that left two students dead and another person seriously injured.

Anthony Mcginn, 60, was before Judge Raymond Finnegan at Monaghan District Court yesterday morning.

Mcginn, with an address at Drumloo, Newbliss in Co Monaghan, is charged with dangerous driving causing the death of two girls.

He also faces another count of dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm.

The charges relate to a fatal road collision in Clones, Co Monaghan, on July 31 last year.

Student friends Kiea Mccann, 17, and sixteen-year-old Dlava Mohamed, who were both on their way to a school debs, died in the incident.

Dlava’s sister Avin, 18, was also critically injured in the collision, but she survived.

Garda Sergeant Thomas Leonard from Clones Garda station yesterday told Judge Finnegan he arrested Mcginn at Drumloo at 7.55am.

He said he then brought him to Monaghan Garda Station, where he was charged at 9.35am.

The sergeant told the court: “He made no reply to the charge after caution.”

Mcginn is charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Kiea Mccann and Dlava Mohamed at Legnakelly, Clones, Co Monaghan, on July 31.

He faces another charge of dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm to Avin Mohamed on the same occasion.

He was released on bail, although the conditions were not read out in court.

He spoke briefly in court to say that he understood he had to abide by the conditions.

Garda Sergeant Lisa Mcentee told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed that the case be heard on indictment at the circuit court.

This means Mcginn will stand trial in front of a judge and jury.

Mcginn, who was wearing a dark jacket and grey sweatshirt, was remanded to appear back at the same court again on April 22. The court heard the state will present the book of evidence on that date. Several members of Ms Mccann’s family were in court for the short hearing. The maximum penalty upon conviction for the offences with which Mcginn is charged is five years in prison.
