Ireland not as liberal as Varadkar and his elite like to think it is

- JOHNKIERANS

✱Louis Walsh is box office on Celebrity Big Brother. He loves the chat and all the gossip on the telly just like in real life.

I am very surprised he agreed to do it because off screen the king of pop is a very shy and private individual. I’d say he is lost without his mobile phone in the house and his great friend, the former model and TV star Glenda Gilson, ringing him daily.

The former Westlife and Boyzone manager is a straight talker who always says what he thinks. He has an opinion on everyone in showbiz and never holds back.

THE liberal elite got a good kicking in last Friday’s referendums and they deserved every bit of it.

The people said a resounding No/no and it rightly set the alarm bells ringing in Government buildings.

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and several ministers were scratching their heads looking for answers. The truth is their “do as we say“arrogant approach went down like a lead balloon with voters and the wording in the proposed constitutional changes was just not acceptable. It was a botched job if there was one.

The idea of taking the word ‘mother’ out of the constitution was a very, very bad idea and upset many women in Ireland more than anything else.

My 84-year-old mother, who is as clever as they come, kept asking me: “Why in the name of God are they doing this?”

My sisters, who I would regard as widely read, intelligent, modern women, were also saying the same.

The useless Greens as usual had their grubby paws all over this ill-fated referendum and were accused by opponents of making misleading statements which thankfully the public didn’t fall for.

The other great liberals in cabinet who

dance to Varadkar’s tune, Paschal Donohoe, Helen Mcentee and Simon Coveney, all mistakenly thought the Yes/ Yes vote would sail through.

Ironically, Fine Gael director of elections for the Yes vote, the normally reliable and sensible Heather Humphries, was hardly seen on the referendum campaign trail.

At least the Sports Minister Thomas Byrne of Fianna Fail made an effort to persuade people to vote Yes as his party’s director of elections, but his arguments did not stack up.

If this gang and the rest of the political establishment have half a brain, they will leave well enough alone and not try to have another referendum on the same issue using different wording a few years down the road. The result tells me that Ireland is not as liberal as some of the politicians think and there are still a lot of conservative values out there. The protection of the family is very important to the vast majority of the nation and the definition of it.

The Irish people trust our constitution and they are sick and tired of the liberal political class encouraged by taxpayer funded non-governmental organisations trying to tamper with it. Many of these groups have their own agendas.

Being a conservative should not be a dirty word in Irish life. It also does not mean you are a far-right fascist.

Fine Gael for years was the most conservative party in Ireland. It used to stand up for the farmers, was largely prolife and very strong on law and order.

Under Leo Varadkar’s leadership they have become a bunch of neo-liberal do-gooders and are completely out of touch with what ordinary Irish people are thinking. They have moved a million miles away from their traditional base in rural Ireland. No wonder nine or so of their TDS are disillusioned and have decided not to stand for re-election.

The other thing is there are very few ministers from rural Ireland in Government, so no wonder they are so out of touch.

The vast majority are from Dublin and Cork.

They are living in their own little Leinster House bubble and have no idea what voters are thinking.

Their “we know best“attitude is also despised in every corner of this land and the people are waiting in the long grass to give the Government parties a right bloody nose in the local and European elections this summer.

People are sick and tired of the Greens’ pompous lecturing and failure to deliver. Roderic O’gorman and Catherine Martin are two of the worst ministers we have ever had in office in this country.

They would be fired by now, only such a move would infuriate the Greens and bring down the Government. They are effectively untouchable.

The leaders of the three parties in Government, Leo, Micheal Martin and Eamon Ryan will now be thinking long and hard before deciding a date for the next General Election following the referendum results.
