WHEN four University of Idaho students were brutally murdered by an unknown attacker in November 2022, it sparked a media frenzy.

Within days, the tragedy became the biggest story on the internet, with two billion hits on Tiktok, reaching the furthest corners of the globe.

Everyone became an armchair detective, spouting speculation and conspiracy theories about what could have happened, with the voices becoming louder than ever.

Model and former Love Island star Zara Mcdermott remembers reading about it on social media and soon becoming hooked.

She says: “I was lying awake in bed in the middle of the night on Tiktok trying to figure it out. I became obsessed with it.”

Students Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen had all been stabbed to death in the small American college town of Moscow, Idaho.

For six weeks, the police said they had no suspects, no motive, no weapon and had found no signs of forced entry into the house.

The mystery, which has now moved on with the arrest of 28-year-old Bryan Kohberger, unleashed the curiosity of true-crime fans all over the world, all looking for clues.

In this reflective documentary, Zara visits Moscow to find out how much of what she saw online was even real, and how much was pure speculation.

She meets the true-crime sleuths making thousands of hours of social media content, and speaks to those who were affected by the rumours spread online.

Seeing the impact of this social media storm, she even questions her own role in how the tragedy played out.
