Kok of the walk in at Kingspan

- BY MIRROR REPORTER

ULSTER have announced the signing of South African winger and former World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year Werner Kok.

Kok’s all-action style, powerful physique and flowing locks has earned him the nickname Tarzan and he has agreed to move to Kingspan Stadium from Sharks on a two-year deal in the summer.

The 31-year-old has been a stalwart for his nation in the Sevens game, with honours including a 2014 Commonwealth Games Gold and a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Kok then switched to the 15s game and enjoyed stints at Western Province and French Top 14 giants Toulouse before playing in the United Rugby Championship with Sharks.

He has scored five tries this term in the URC including scores against Munster and Connacht.

“I am looking forward to starting a new adventure in my career with Ulster Rugby and can’t wait to become an Ulsterman,” Kok said.

“I want to thank Ulster and the team for this incredible opportunity. I hope to make you proud on and off the field.

“Moving from South Africa will be a big change for me and my wife but it’s a challenge that we are very excited for. See you soon Belfast!”

After a difficult season and the departure of head coach Dan Mcfarland, the arrival of a winger in the style of Kok is exactly what the fans need.

“Werner will add something different to our group with his vast experience across the Sevens game and 15s, where he has showcased his own exciting brand of rugby,” said Bryn Cunningham (inset), head of rugby operations and recruitment.

“I think he will fit in well with the talented backs in the squad as we look to develop our options in the backfield.”
