COPS in Boston have issued warnings about Rathkeale Rovertype scammers, declaring: “What starts with $1,500 paving escalates to $30,000 for structural engineering consultants.”

They said locals were paying thousands of dollars for masonry, driveway paving, chimney, basement, roofing, and fence repair “only to be left with worse damage or little to no improvement”.

The Boston Police Department said most of the scammers are travelling from Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Explaining some of the tactics used, cops said the fraudsters claim they have “leftover materials” from other jobs and can offer a discount as a result.

They said the crooks will often engage in high-pressure sales techniques and will exaggerate the amount of work that needs to be done.

Officers said the scammers will often ask for the cheques to be made out to them personally and not the company name.

Cops said: “In past years, Boston residents have paid tens of thousands of dollars for masonry, driveway paving, chimney, basement, roofing, and fence repair; only to be left with worse damage or little to no improvement. What starts with $1,500 paving or masonry repair escalates to reported foundation damage and $20,000 to $30,000 for structural engineering consultants.

“Residents are asked to take precautions from becoming a victim.” They warned anybody who approaches residents should be viewed as a “potential scammer”.

Police officers added: “Remember, for any work on your property you should obtain a minimum of two estimates from reputable companies who will carry the appropriate insurance, licences, apply for the appropriate permits, and provide references and coverage to you for their work after completion.”

The Rathkeale Rovers is a notorious gang made up of members of the Traveller community, and they operate both internationally and in Ireland, using the small Limerick town as their base.

The thugs are known to be involved in crimes such as money laundering, drug smuggling, art theft and the tarmac scam.
