VLADIMIR Putin yesterday warned a clash between Russia and NATO could leave the West on the brink of World War III.

The tyrant spoke out after his sham election win in which he was voted back in as president for a fifth term.

Asked if conflict could erupt with NATO, Putin said: “Everything is possible in today’s world.

“It’s clear to everyone that it will put us a step away from full-scale World War III.”

He also pledged his allegiance to China, which the West views as the biggest threat in the future.

Putin rigged the elections using spooks – even using the names of dead soldiers he sent to their deaths in Ukraine.

Any public criticism of the dictator or his war in

Ukraine has been stifled during the polls. Independent media was silenced and his fiercest political foe, Alexei Navalny, died in an Arctic prison last month. Other critics are either in jail or in exile.

Voters had virtually no choice and independent monitoring of the election was extremely limited.

Russia’s Central Election Commission yesterday claimed Putin secured 87% of the vote.

Chief Ella Pamfilova said nearly 76 million voters cast their ballots for the tyrant, his highest tally ever.

Asked whether she had a message for the leader, Navalny’s wife Yulia Navalnaya replied: “There could be no negotiations and nothing with Mr Putin, because he’s a killer, he’s a gangster.”

Western leaders have denounced the election as a farce, while President

Volodymyr Zelensky criticised voting in Ukrainian areas that Russia has illegally annexed. He said: “Everything Russia does on the occupied territory of Ukraine is a crime.”

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said: “These Russian elections underline the depth of repression under Putin’s regime, which seeks to silence opposition to his illegal war. Putin removes political opponents, controls the media and crowns himself winner. It is not democracy.”

Putin praised his link with Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying: “The relations between Russia and China are a stabilising factor while good personal relations between the leaders allow us to develop ties even further.

“Our relations have been taking shape over the past two decades.

“They are very strong and we are complementing each other.”

Western intelligence regards China as the biggest long-term threat to western democracy and Russia a major threat in the short term. One intelligence source told the Mirror: “We look at this in this way – if Russia is the storm, then China is climate change.”

Putin has led Russia as president or prime minister since December 1999, a tenure marked by international military aggression and an increasing intolerance for dissent.

At the end of his fifth term Putin, 71, would be the longest-serving Russian leader since Catherine the Great in the 18th century.

As early results came in, Putin hailed them as an indication of “trust” and “hope” in him – while critics said they were another reflection of the preordained nature of the election.

He added: “When we were consolidated, no one has ever managed to frighten us, to suppress our will and our self-conscience.

“They failed in the past and they will fail in the future.”
