Putin is the biggest threat to peace in Europe since Hitler

- JOHNKIERANS The Beast from the East

I was glad to see that Sinn Fein will not be holding another referendum on mothers in the home and carers if they are returned to office.

The people have made their decision and the party is well advised to leave the matter alone.

Fair play to Sinn Fein TD Matt Carthy, a rock of sense, for clarifying the issue.

The days of the elite holding a second referendum to get what they think is “the right result” are over.

THE election of Vladimir Putin for a fifth successive term as President of Russia should be sending alarm bells ringing around the world.

The lunatic in the Kremlin sees his war on Ukraine as a stepping stone to greater things.

He is ready and prepared if necessary to use nuclear weapons to restore his country as a force in the world.

And if it means reclaiming old Soviet satellite states like Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Hungry and the old Czech Republic so be it.

The EU should be afraid, very, very afraid. Putin is the biggest threat to peace in Europe since Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

Yet here in Ireland we are sitting in never neverland with our eyes shut and our ears closed as if there is nothing going on. We seem to think that a new world war will not affect us just like the last time.

The possible election of Donald Trump as the next US President in November will also not help. He does not feel any need for the United States to protect Europe from bad Vlad and will pull it out of Nato at the

earliest chance leaving the EU to defend itself. Trump does not care what country Putin invades so long as he does not interfere with American business. He does not believe America should give the Ukrainians one cent of military aid.

This is bad news for Ireland because most of us always believed that the Yanks would come and protect us if the s*** hit the fan.

Let’s face it, our military is the biggest joke in Europe and that is not the fault of the brave men and women who sign up to protect us.

Successive governments have thrown them under the bus for decades with no investment and no proper pay, destroying all ambition and morale.

We have an air force, army and navy run by a bunch of civil servants in the Department of Defence who know absolutely nothing about war or what capabilities we actually need to defend our country.

The politicians have been quite happy not to invest money in defence – because they saw it as a waste of money since we are a neutral country.

And yet they were more than happy to let Nato and our neighbour Britain defend us. Our whole picturesque Wild Atlantic Way at the moment has become the drug destination for the biggest cartels in the world.

They see our undefended west coast as a penalty kick to get their drugs into Europe because we have hardly anyone there to stop them.

The experts reckon for every shipment of cocaine seized there are at least 10 that got ashore.

Imagine, we had ONE SHIP to protect the whole country last weekend and it was tied up in Dun Laoghaire harbour letting members of the public tour the vessel for St Patrick’s Day. This episode was a disgrace and an absolute joke.

It seems to me that the whole country is asleep at the wheel and cannot see the shocking reality of what is going on and what is around the corner.

What is the plan if there is a nuclear war in Europe? How is the Government going to protect our people?

If we do escape nuclear damage then we will be one of the few countries in Europe capable of growing food. This will make us a target for the Russians among others.

The Government was told by the Commission into the Future of the Defence Forces that we needed to invest three billion a year into our military, have a Navy of 15 ships and buy eight fighter jets to protect our skies.

They just ignored the advice and went for an easier and cheaper option of getting to this recommended stage within 10 years or so instead of doing it now.

Denmark has a similar population as Ireland but is in Nato. It has reacted to the Russian threat by increasing defence spending and is starting to call up young women and men for military service.

If we called up people to join our Defence Forces we wouldn’t even have guns for them, that is how bad things are.

The threat of nuclear war is very real. With mad men like the Putins of this world nobody knows what to expect next.
