HE’S STILL GLYNN OUR THOUGHTS

- PAT NOLAN

GALWAY boss Henry Shefflin says that a decision will be made on Johnny Glynn once he undergoes another week’s trial.

Glynn (above), who last played for the county in 2019 and is based in New York, trained with the Tribe panel earlier this month and has since returned to the US.

But he will be back in Ireland soon, when Shefflin (below) will have a second look at him before deciding whether to add him to the squad for the Championship.

He explained: “He was back for a week, a trial, he’ll be back for another week and we’ll get a training block. We’ll see how he gets on at that stage and then we’ll make a call on it.”

Galway are due to embark on a training camp to Portugal shortly though Shefflin didn’t confirm whether or not Glynn, who has played for the New York footballers in recent years, will be on that trip.

He added: “We’re not quite sure yet, I don’t know. We were only focused on the Limerick game and our plans are not fixed on what’s coming up at that stage.”

Saturday’s draw with the All-ireland champions eliminated Galway from the League and they will return to competitive action against Carlow in the Leinster Championship on April 21.

The provincial campaign will come too soon for Kevin Cooney however.

The Sarsfields man suffered a serious hamstring injury in the Walsh Cup final defeat to Wexford in January and, having undergone surgery, the earliest he can hope to return is in the All-ireland series.

“Hopefully we’ll be still there and after that, that’s the kind of timeframe,” said Shefflin. “He’s out of his brace, he’s starting to move a little bit which is good for him.

“I think we’re in a pretty clean bill of health which is good.

“Declan Mcloughlin is back on the pitch again which is great as well after a broken thumb so that’s a positive too.”
