Derek’s final message
IT was Derek Draper’s idea to make this third documentary about his battle with Covid.
Derek struggled with extreme complications from the disease after contracting it in March 2020, and he died in January.
The virus upended family life, as his wife, Kate Garraway, stayed home to care for him. Having already made two award-winning films, Finding Derek and Caring For Derek, Kate and Derek were feeling positive about his recovery.
Broadcaster Kate recalls: “He got very emotional at the idea of making another documentary. I asked him, ‘What would be your main message? And he said, ‘Never give up fighting for what you believe in and for the people you love’.”
Following the tragic loss of Derek, this becomes an even more emotive watch as it follows the final year of his life.
With close access to the family, it provides an insight into his personal struggles with illness and highlights the challenges faced by millions in the UK living with serious illness and disability and those who care for them.
With around five million unpaid carers in England and Wales, the film also shines a light on the debilitating costs and practical difficulties of looking after loved ones in their homes.
Derek’s Story also reflects on Derek’s life before Covid, including his high-profile political career. And we get insight into his relationship with Kate, their early years together, and how his illness changed the nature of their dynamic while they maintained their close bond.
Asked why he wanted to take part in this film, Derek said: “I want to be heard.”
