Dublin v Westmeath

Tonight, 7.30pm

DUBLIN under-20 boss Ciaran Farrelly believes that several of his players can break into the senior side.

Dublin open their Eirgrid Leinster under-20 campaign against Westmeath in Kinnegad this evening, bidding to reach an 11th successive provincial final at that grade.

Also in the group is Meath, with two teams to qualify for the knockout stages, while there are two other groups of four.

When asked whether the players at his disposal can go on to make an impact at senior level, Farrelly said: “I think there’s plenty.

“They have all the right attributes. The biggest attribute that they have is the desire to get there. There is a huge desire within the panel that we have to go on and to be probably the best that they can be.

“You do have a lot of lads that are aspiring to make it through onto the Dublin senior team.

“I think the team that we have at the minute, there’s a lot of really high quality players that are in place and a lot of them aren’t even under-20, they’re under-18, under-19 still this year but they’re working hard towards that working into the under-20 team first and whatever they can do after that will be up to themselves.”

Dublin have lost the last three Leinster finals at under-20 level, while they haven’t won an All-ireland since 2017 and Lee Gannon is one of the few to come through and nail down a senior spot of late.

“They are still working really, really hard in the background,” said Farrelly of others from recent underage sides.

“It is a hard team to break into but it’s not through a lack of quality. I think it’s just really, really tough to break through.”
