Mac aims to trouser silverware

- BY CHRIS MCKENNA

ALEXIS MAC ALLISTER won football’s ultimate prize when Argentina lifted the World Cup in 2022 – but Mo Salah is still teaching him a thing or two.

Even when it comes to fashion choices for a pre-match warm-up.

Liverpool visited Sheffield United In December as the winter chill began to take hold.

So Mac Allister (top), signed from Brighton last summer, kitted himself out in tracksuit bottoms and a woolly hat for the warm-up.

But Salah (circle) politely informed him that’s not how it worked at Liverpool.

“When I was at Brighton, I used to wear trousers, and then I came here” Mac Allister explained. “I remember at Sheffield United we went out to do the warm-up and Mo said, “Why would you wear that?”

“Since that day I have never worn trousers again. Only because of Mo.”

The little details are part of Liverpool’s fabric, but it is the bigger things which have turned them into title contenders again.

Not least the arrival of Mac Allister among others to refresh an ageing squad that had fallen off the pace.

Now the Reds host Mac Allister’s former club this weekend hoping to take a vital step towards the Premier League title.

And the Carabao Cup winners are still in the hunt for the Europa League.

Mac Allister, 25, said: “When you want something, you have to work for it – and this group is very good at that.

“This is a group of winners. But they are good people as well.

“Of course the idea is to win everything we can. But for that, we have to keep working and improving.

“Do we want to win? Yes, everything. But we have to focus on a daily basis, do our best, keep improving and then at the end we will see what we achieve.”
