Woman suffered ‘profound pain’

ONE of Gary Glitter’s victims is seeking around €583,000 in damages from the paedophile rocker, the High Court has heard.

Glitter, 79, was jailed for 16 years in 2015 for assaulting the woman and two other schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980.

The pervert, who is now back at HMP The Verne in Dorset, was not present at yesterday’s hearing.

The court heard that part of the woman’s damages bid includes a claim for €23,000 a year for 40 years, to cover the time she has been unable to work – although any award is likely to be reduced.

Jonathan Metzer, for the woman – who cannot be named for legal reasons – said Glitter’s abuse had a “dramatic and terrible impact” on her education, work and personal relationships.

He said: “One can only begin to imagine the profound pain felt by someone who has experienced such shocking abuse.. then suffered feelings of shame and worthlessness.”

He said his client is “plagued by thoughts of self-blame” and said Glitter exploited his status.

Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, was not represented by a lawyer, with the Central London court told he had not so far engaged with the civil case.

Mrs Justice Tipples said she would give her decision in May. The court heard previously a judgment has been made in the woman’s favour after Glitter failed to enter a defence or participate in any way.

Glitter was convicted of two charges of indecent assault and one of sex with a girl under 18 in relation to the claimant, the court heard.

He was released last year but recalled for breach-ing his licensing conditions.

He will now remain in jail after the Parole Board last month blocked a bid for freedom, saying he poses a serious risk to children. He is due to be freed in 2031.
