IRENE’S KILLERS HAVE FALLEN OUT IN PRISON

Pair kept in separate wings in Mountjoy and won’t talk

- BY JOHN KIERANS news@irishmirror.ie

TWO men jailed for life for the brutal murder of housewife Irene White have fallen out and no longer talk to each other in prison.

Niall Power, and Anthony Lambe, both 43, have no interaction whatsoever and are deliberately kept in different wings of Mountjoy.

Lambe is in what is known as the Progressive Unit along with the likes of Limerick gangland boss Dessie Dundon while Power is held in the main prison building where he works as a cleaner.

A prison source said: “They can’t look each other in the eye – they hate the ground the other walks on. They each blame the other for what happened to that poor woman so we keep them as far away from each other as possible.

“Power has deep regrets about what happened because he knew Irene White personally while Lambe is just getting on with life in prison and doing his time. He says very little about it.”

Security company owner Power paid former drink and drug addict Lambe from Co Monaghan €2,000 to murder Dundalk mumof-two Irene. He broke into her home in April 2005 and stabbed her more than 30 times and later contacted Power to say the job was done.

Power claimed he was contracted to organise the murder by a third mystery person who he has refused to name despite repeated attempts by detectives.

He claims he was promised a load of money for the killing but in the end never received a penny.

He occasionally drank with Lambe who did some security work for him and persuaded him to murder Irene.

Lambe was convicted in January 2018 after pleading guilty. The next day Power walked into Dundalk Garda station and admitted his part in the murder after he said his conscience got to him. He too pleaded guilty and was jailed for life.

Power is regarded as a model prisoner in Mountjoy and prison staff say he is genuinely “remorseful”.

The prison source added: “He is very angry and bitter at the person who contracted him to do the killing in the first place.”

The DPP has refused to act on a recent Garda file saying a named third person should be charged with the murder, because in its view there wasn’t enough evidence.
