I intend to Call home very soon

- BY ROBERT HYNES

PLANS are being made for Callum Walsh to fight in Ireland for the first time as a professional this summer.

The Dana White-backed Cork boxer took his record to 10-0 with a ninth round stoppage win over Kazakhstan’s Dauren Yeleussinov to win the WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight title at Madison Square Garden on St Patrick’s weekend earlier this month.

Walsh, 23, is now set to fight closer to his Los Angeles base on June 7 before efforts are made to secure the Freddie Roachtrained fighter a homecoming bout later in the summer.

He said: “We’re definitely working on a plan to get back to Ireland.

“That’s the goal, I don’t know whether it will be Cork

or where it will be, but definitely getting back home this year is the goal.”

The Cobh native says

New York feels “like a second home” because of the huge Irish community in the city and he could fight in the Big Apple again before the end of the year.

However, with all 10 of Walsh’s pro bouts to date having taken place in America, the six-time Irish champion and European gold medallist is desperate to experience fighting in front of an Irish crowd.

“All of my fights have been out here,” said Walsh. “I feel like I’m after getting a lot of hype and especially through the fights at Madison Square Garden, it’s like people are really starting to take notice of what I’m doing so now coming home would be a good buzz.”

Callum Walsh returns to action on Friday, June 7 at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California. Take a look back at all of his wins on UFC Fight Pass.
