Coleman: The whole camp’s behind John and his team

- BY GARRY DOYLE

IRELAND captain Seamus Coleman says the FAI should consider John O’shea for the permanent.

The veteran insists the Ireland centurian has made a bif impact on the camp and he is the latest player to come out in support of O’shea.

Speaking in the aftermath of Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat to the Swiss, Coleman said: “The manager has been fantastic. Obviously I played with him but the way he carried himself all week, him and his staff, the work and the detail they put in was incredible.

“The pride he had in managing his country was clear for us all to see. And he looked comfortable in it too, not over-awed by it. He looked the part and worked really hard on the training ground.

“On a different night against Belgium, we could have won the game, Evan would usually put that penalty away, it was unlucky on his behalf and on Tuesday night, bar the free kick, we were ok against the Swiss. We need to score some goals, of course.”

Asked specifically if the lengthy wait for a new Ireland manager had been frustrating, Coleman replied: “As captain I care about the players and all the rest of that but that’s not my job to figure out who the manager’s going to be.

“I am a player, I have never been one to speak about people above me or anything like that.

“Whoever it is will give their all for it. I think there’s a case for John, the way he’s carried himself, what he has done for the country, he has coached for a period of time now, the lads all really enjoyed it.

“Whoever that will be, we will find out soon and as always, we will have massive pride in representing our country and give our all for whoever will be in charge.

“I don’t want to sound like someone who’s played a couple of games for the manager and I am doing all I can to get him in but the done behind the scenes has been really impressive.

“I think he will be in the running... I have no idea but why not be in the running for and I’d be delighted but that’s above my pay grade.”
